However, this required owning both cartridges which was expensive, and the game as a whole hasn't been re-released outside of its Steam version.
The cartridge was built with "lock-on technology" that allows the Sonic 3 cartridge to physically sit on top of Sonic & Knuckles, essentially making the full, original version of the game with extra stages, other characters and more. Sonic 3 & Knuckles wasn't completely changed or lost though.
